Sunday was a professional baseball player turned evangelist in 1886. He preached to Wheeling crowds in 1912 inside a specially built, 1,500 foot long structure, three times a day for six weeks. 20,000 attended the first day and thousands more followed in the coming weeks.
'Reverend Burwell Spurlock, one of the ablest ministers of the gospel in the state in his day. He was the father of America Spurlock and Burwell, Jr. Rev. Spurlock died Aug. 5, 1872, aged 90 years. Maternal grandfather of Justice of Peace Claude Spurlock of Cabell County.'
Sallie Lowther Norris attended Glenville State Normal School before entering WVU. in 1889. Like her classmate and lifelong friend Harriet Lyon, she excelled in her studies, winning a freshman math prize. Norris spoke out frequently and eloquently on behalf of the right of women to a WVU education and was a charter member of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (now the AAUW) chapter in Fairmont. She raised four children of of whom attended WVU, and provided essential assistance to her husband Judge Emmet Showalter, after illness left him partially disabled.
Born 7/22/1874- Died 7/24/1965. Son of Alexander Stonestreet, grandson of James Edmund Stonestreet. Jim spent 19 years (1946-1965) researching his family's genealogy.
This dress was made by Miss Blanche,and has a portrait collar. She made it to wear when leaving West Virginia Wesleyan in Spring, 1919 after earning her Graduate Studies Degree, to teach in the Fall in Morgantown. Blanche is the daughter of Alexander and Martha Stonestreet.
