Our Chaplain Gives each of us a copy of this engraving, to show our friends the way we sing and hold meetings in camp. He desires us to tell them to pray for us and him, that we may prove faithful to our country and our God, and not be found wanting in any day of temptation and trial.

Old American Flag hanging on a wall beside a picture of Abraham Lincoln.The Flag was hand sewn in Shepherdstown within days of West Virginia's creation on June 20, 1863. It is one of only a few 35-star flags in existence. The 35-star flag was in use for only three years, and during most of its lifespan was not recognized by the southern states represented among its stars.

Camp Hill at Harpers Ferry was situated above the lower section of the town. During their occupations both Confederate and Union Armies tried in vain to fortify the area.
Also known as Maulsby's Battery, this unit saw action through out the Civil War mostly in the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns. Among the soldiers is Sergeant John W. Mason from Morgantown, West Virginia who taught at West Virginia University in 1867 and subsequently served on the West Virginia Supreme Court.

A Winchester and Potomac Railroad train carrying Federal Troops passes through Virginius Island at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The shell of the Abraham Herr Mill, burned by Confederate soldiers in 1861, can be seen in the center of the photograph.
Taken from Talbott Hill across the Tygart Valley River, the view is from the position of the Federal artillery during the Battle of Philippi, the first land engagement of the Civil War, on June 3, 1861. The vacant area, left of center, is where the Confederates were camped.
