During the 1917 season, Hite enlisted in the First Officers Training Camp after the United States declared war and was commissioned as a lieutenant. In his absence, the team elected Russell Bailey as the captain of the team. Russell came to WVU from Huntington High and was well-known as an excellent athlete.
