Belgen was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University, graduating in 1897.  He worked as an engineer in Central America, South America, Washington, D. C., and eventually began working for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad company. The church was established in the 1850's when Irish and German settlers came to the town of Grafton to build the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B. & O.).

30. Baltimore and Ohio R. R. Depot by Night Clarksburg, W. Va.

This 305 foot long iron bridge over the Monongahela River in Marion County was built in 1852 at the astronomical price of 1/2 million dollars and was, at that time, the longest iron bridge in the country. Confederate General "Grumble" Jones targeted this bridge during his infamous 1863 raid. After two failed attempts to blow the bridge, he succeeded on the third try.
