View of the town of Belington with the Tygart Valley River running parallel to Main Street. The elevation behind the town is Laurel Hill where Confederate forces under General Garnett were cut-off after the Union victory at Rich Mountain, south of Belington in July, 1861. Garnett ordered a retreat and was hotly pursued by Union General Morris's troops through the mountains and finally defeated at Corricks Ford on the Cheat River. This was considered the first campaign of the Civil War.
