Involved in the special training programs during World War II  and known as the 2218th A. A. F. Base Unit (Coll. Trng.) A. C., these cadets received ten hours of dual flight instructions by University flight instructors in University planes and classroom instruction in math, physics, geography, English and history from University faculty. Many were deplored to the European and Pacific theaters.

At WVU, the Air Corps part-time training was replaced with a full time eight-week course. Other programs were also implemented such as the Army Specialized Training Program.

This eight week course was part of a program with an accelerated curriculum implemented by the United States military at several universities during World War II to meet demands for junior officers and soldiers with high technical skills.
