"(1848-1912) Virgil A. Lewis, West Virginia historian and educator, was born in Mason County. He received his early education in local schools and went on to study law, being admitted to the bar in 1879. He established the Southern Historical Magazine at Charleston in 1892. From 1893 to 1897 he held a number of public offices - State Superintendent of Schools, Commissioner of State Printing, President of the Board of Regents of State Normal Schools and a member of the Board of Public Works. In this period he also edited and published the Est Virginia School Journal. He served as the state's first archivist from 1905 until his death in 1912. He was appointed a member and served as secretary of the West Virginia Commission of the Jamestown Exposition in 1907. Among his historical works are History of West Virginia, the Life and Times of Anne Bailey and How West Virginia was Made."

Eli Whitney, Matthew Fontaine Maury, John Ericsson, Joseph Jefferson and Cyrus W. Field have also been subjects for Miss Latham's writings. Although she is best known for her contributions to children's literature, she has published numerous plays, and a handbook for actors and directors. Her most recent children's stories have been translated into Spanish. Miss Latham now lives in Miami, Florida."
