'Dear Mr. Shelter: Would it be possible to have this photograph cleaned somewhat and reproduced in say, half a dozen copies? It shows the village of Core in 1900. The Church is the Dolls Run Christian Church. The plant just to the left of it is the Eureka Pipe Line Company pumping station (for oil). The small house to the right is my birthplace (January 20, 1902) Next comes the original Core Post Office and Core Brothers General Store. The road is now West Virginia Route 7. For you archives, sincerely, Earl L. Core.'

The photograph was taken from the east bank directly opposite Maple Run and the town of Rockley. Quarry Run empties into the Cheat at the bend in the river (left center). During the operation of the Cheat Iron Works(early 19th century), a saw mill and a boat yard were located close to the mouth of Quarry Run. Lumber from this mill was used to build flat boats to transport iron to markets. Information from A&M 3848; Grafton, A. Edwin. Paper.

Strosnider barn (Livery stable in lower part). Grain mill in upper part. Before being a grain mill this was a woolen mill owned and operated by Moses Strosnider and his family. The Mem's Lantz barn can be seen just above the mill. It was actually across the street on the Lantz homestead. The back can be seen on the Strosmider Hotel.
