'Beckley was founded in 1835 by General Alfred Beckley, a son of John Beckley, who was born in London, England, and came to this country when a child.  The ground upon which the city of Beckley was started in 1835 and Raleigh County formed in 1850 was a part of the Beckley-Moore grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to Alfred Beckley's father, John Beckley, and Andrew Moore.
